Great Parrotbill (Conostoma aemodium)

Great Parrotbill (Passeriformes > Paradoxornithidae > Conostoma > aemodium) is the largest Parrotbill we have in India. It is a rare bird though marked Least Concern as population not globally threatened. It is monotype (no subspecies). Male & Female both look similar though male is slightly larger.  It’s presence is limited to few areas like Pangolakha wildlife anctuary in Sikkim. Few years back the bird was found in the Senchal forest on a road towards Tigerhill observatory which helped many to see it due to close proximity of this location to Bagdogra airport/New Jalpaiguri station. The road is busy with cars & travelers around the year except monsoon when we birders flock there. It coincides with it’s breeding season making the chance of sighting even more. I was unsuccessful to find this bird in my first trip to Senchal in August 2021. But in June 2022, I saw and recorded (photo, video, audio) 2 separate birds in 2 separate places in that area. While the first sighting gave me the lifer but the quality was far better in second instance when the bird was on open perch for 2-3 minutes. You may see the food on its beak in few of the pictures.  I studied ID pointers like orange beak, greyish-white forehead to differentiate if from Brown Parrotbill which is also seen in that area but the size is way too larger and it was visibly different looking (not to mention the different call it was making). The name Great is so appropriate. Hope we find this beautiful bird in some others parts of the state (Singalila?) which has similar altitude & habitat.
